POWERS: Sekhmet was a lion-headed goddess in ancient Egypt, revered as a powerful deity of war, destruction, healing, and protection. Equally feared and worshipped, the lioness Sekhmet was without a doubt one of the most prominent goddesses in the Egyptian pantheon. Sekhmet's name is derived from the root word sekhem (𓋴𓎡𓅓), meaning power or might. Her name, "Sekhmet," translates to " She Who is Powerful” or “The Mighty One", she embodied fierce energy and was both a bringer of wrath and a source of restoration. Sekhmet personifies sekhem (universal life force energy) as the force that maintains cosmic order (Ma'at) through both destruction and healing. She was depicted as a woman with the head of a lioness, crowned by a large solar disk, relating her to her father, the sun god Ra and a uraeus (cobra) representing her healing powers. She may hold a scepter (symbolizing power and authority), an ankh (symbolizing life) or a papyrus or lotus flower staff (representing purity, regeneration and the cycle of life) Sekhmet was a fearsome protector of the gods, often unleashed by her father, Ra, to punish humanity or enemies. She was associated with plagues, fire, and the scorching heat of the sun. Sekhmet's ferocity was seen as a force to restore balance (Ma'at) by punishing wrongdoers and cleansing corruption or shaking up stagnation. She also served as a guardian, protecting the pharaohs and temples from harm. Her image was often invoked for strength and safety. Despite her destructive side, Sekhmet was also a goddess of healing and physicians. She had the power to spread or cure diseases, symbolizing the duality of destruction and renewal. Seen as an expression of the sun as heat melts stagnation and poison within the body. Sekhmet’s dual nature as both a destructive and restorative force highlighted her role as a mediator of life and death, embodying the cycles of chaos and order. She destroys that which no longer serves us so we can build new. Connect to her for strength, success, healing, protection and Ma’at (balance), honor her with dance, music and feast.
