Anubis

Anubis (also known as Anpu or Inpu) is one of the most iconic and oldest gods of ancient Egypt. Represented as a large black wild dog or jackal often with a human body. 

He was originally the god of the underworld but later became associated with the crucial embalming process and a guide to the dead bringing them to the other world and protecting their souls. The ancient Egyptians believed that the preservation of the body with use of sweet-smelling herbs and plants would help the deceased because Anubis would sniff the mummy and only let the pure move on to the afterlife.

He is the guardian and protector of the dead warding off evil spirits. Tombs in the Valley of the Kings were often sealed with an image of Anubis. This association began as jackals were often seen roaming cemeteries and would dig up poorly buried bodies. 
 
Anubis was credited with having a high level of anatomical knowledge as a result of embalming, so he was also the patron of anesthesiology and his priests were skilled herbal healers. Priests even wore Anubis masks during mummification process. 

Ancient Egyptians often kept animals such as dogs, cats, monkeys and gazelles at home. Dogs were an important part of Egyptian life and they were named and given collars accompanying their owners on hunting trips or used as guard dogs. They were often mummified and buried with their owners too. To the east of Saqqara there was a place known as Anubeion, where a shrine and a cemetery of mummified dogs and jackals was discovered.
