ORIGIN: Egypt

Known as the "Key of Life" or symbol of "Eternal Life". The circle represents that which has no beginning nor end as the sun, in the spirit of Ra the Sun god. The horizontal line at the bottom of the ankh symbolizes the horizon, the point where the sun appears to touch the earth.

The symbol also represents the balance between opposing forces such as masculine and feminine, heaven and earth, positive and negative. It is the tie between spirit and the body bringing balance and mind-body healing.

Another symbolic interpretation is the union of woman/Isis and man/Osiris for the creation of life. The upper part representing the female uterus and the lower part the male sexual organs uniting both sexes for the circle of life providing fertility. The union of Isis and Osiris is also believed to flood the Nile river annually providing fertility to the land which is why the Ankh also was known as the Key to the Nile.

The Ankh is often depicted as being placed on the lips of dead pharaohs granting them eternal life or immortality in the afterlife. The Key opens the doors of the tombs and the world of the dead. To give an Ankh to someone is to wish them eternal life.

It was a powerful symbol of hope and regeneration in ancient Egypt, and it continues to be used as a symbol of life and vitality today. After the arrival of Christianity in Egypt, the Ankh symbol was later adopted and evolved into the cross we know today.  It can be used for channeling Sekhem (life force) energy, connecting with the higher self, balance, protection, healing, activating the chakras or manifestation.

Wood is a living material—once part of a tree that grew from the Earth, reaching toward the heavens. This dual connection to both Earth and sky makes wood a natural bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. When carved into sacred symbols, wood retains the life force (ka) of the tree it came from, carrying the energy of growth, renewal, and grounding. It is especially resonant with nature-based spiritual practices and Kemetian reverence for the natural world as a manifestation of divine order (Ma’at).

Because it is porous and breathable, wood also acts as a gentle conductor of energy. It absorbs intention and radiates it softly into a space, making wooden symbols ideal for altars, meditation, and spiritual healing. The organic warmth of wood aligns with the nurturing aspect of the divine, offering grounding, protection, and a sense of continuity with nature and spirit.
